Alderpath tutors preparing a teaching laboratory before a morning session in Cardiff

About

A school built around supervised benches

We teach biomedical engineering practice as laboratory craft — measurement, materials, and device critique — from Newport Road, Cardiff.

Official name and history

The official registered business name is Alderpath Biomedical Engineering School Ltd. The school was established in 2011 when a small group of clinical engineers and biomaterials tutors began running weekend instrument clinics for career changers who needed supervised bench time outside university terms.

By 2014 the clinics had grown into a standing Foundation Laboratory Programme. In 2018 we moved into larger teaching rooms on Newport Road to keep physiology measurement, biomaterials casting, and verification equipment under one roof. Today Alderpath remains an independent teaching school focused on practical cohorts rather than degree awards.

Mission

Our mission is to give learners enough real instrument time, sterile-handling practice, and written critique that they can walk into a hospital workshop or medtech studio without guessing at the first verification form.

People and approach

Teaching staff rotate between foundation cohorts, Design Studio evenings, and Clinical Engineering CPD days. Sessions stay small. Tutors sign skills-log entries only when the evidence is complete — including the awkward paperwork that employers actually ask about.

Values

  • Evidence before polish: unfinished prototypes are welcome; undocumented ones are not.
  • Safety language spoken aloud: PPE, isolation, and contamination lines are part of every course.
  • Local grounding: we teach for Welsh and wider UK hospital and manufacturer contexts.
